13 Exposed In Radioactive Breach At Harborview: SFD
SEATTLE, WA A radioactive substance leaked while it was being removed from a building at Harborview Medical Center early Friday morning. Thirteen people were exposed to the Caesium-137, and eight were hospitalized.
Seattle fire's hazmat team responded to near Harborview Hall at Terry and Terrace just before 1 a.m. That's where a team of contractors was transporting the radioactive material when it breached.
The hazmat team was able to contain the material and said that there was not threat to the public. All 13 exposed were "asymptomatic," SFD said. Five of the workers were allowed to go home.
Caesium-137 is a powder that has a range of medical uses, from radiation therapy to blood transfusions. Harborview Hall is a vacant building along Terry Avenue that is partially used as a King County homeless shelter.
