Anti-vaxxers lose: Measles vaccination bill poised to pass Legislature
The Washington Legislature is poised to eliminate personal and philosophical objections to vaccinating children against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), despite hearings packed with opponents, the so-called "anti-vaxxers."
The legislation cleared the Senate Health Committee on Tuesday and is headed to the floor for a vote. It has already passed the State House of Representatives on a 57-40 vote.
"At a time when internet myths and alternate facts make it harder for people to know the truth about the science-based measures that keep our communities safe, we are taking action to protect the public health from highly contagious diseases," said Sen. Annette Cleveland, D-Vancouver, the committee's chair.
The legislation comes in reaction to an outbreak of measles in Clark County, where there have been 73 cases, 53 of them among children aged 1 to 10.
