State Senate creates way to vacate old marijuana convictions
The Washington State Senate, on a near party line vote, approved legislation to let those with past marijuana possession convictions petition a court to vacate those convictions and wipe their records clean.
The legislation, which cleared the Senate late Monday, would allow convictions to be vacated upon request if the petitioner was 21 years of age or older at the time of the misdemeanor.
"The people of Washington have evolved on the issue of marijuana consumption and it's time that our laws do the same," said State Sen. Joe Nguyen, D-White Center, author of the bill.
Washington voted in 2012 to legalize, regulate and tax recreational use of marijuana by those over 21. But the initiative carried no provision to clear the records of those with past, minor convictions for cannabis possession.
