Alaskan Way Viaduct teardown expected to take six months (Video)
Removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct is expected to take six months. Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. won the design-build contract with a $93.7 million bid.
The 65-year-old viaduct will be removed one frame at a time, though the work will be done at multiple locations at once. Crews will work top to bottom.
Workers will use tractor-sized impact hammers to remove the upper deck. In some places crews will cut pieces off and use cranes to lift them away. Next the lower deck will be removed. The last step is removal of the foundations, which in some places are 5 feet deep.
Removal of the Columbia Street onramp and the Seneca Street offramp will be slightly different. Workers will use small excavators to remove the bridge deck, then forklifts and cranes to remove the girders one at a time. Concrete, rebar and steel from the ramp structures will be lowered to the ground and hauled away.
State transportation officials plan to use concrete rubble from the viaduct to fill in the Battery Street Tunnel. Steel from the viaduct will be recycled.
