The 'Gray Lady' speaks: New York Times endorses Initiative 1631
The New York Times has invited the state of Washington to lead and set an example for the nation in responding to climate change.
The "Gray Lady," as it is often nicknamed, in an editorial published Tuesday, endorsed Initiative 1631, the statewide ballot measure that would place a fee on greenhouse gas emissions by most (but not all) of Washington's major emitters of greenhouse gasses.
"Will voters in Washington state breathe new life into the idea of taxing carbon emission? Plenty of people worried about the earth's future certainly hope so."
About 40 governments around the world, notably the European Union, have put a price on carbon. Washington would be the first state in the US to do so, if voters pass the initiative. A tight vote is expected.
"If the proposal, Initiative 1631, wins --- as we all hope it does -- the result could ripple beyond Washington's boundaries," the Times argued.
