The Burke-Gilman helps light up bikers as local routes get hostile
It's about to get easier to see bikers on the Burke-Gilman Trail.
A new system, powered entirely by solar energy, is being installed along the popular trail starting this week.
Designed by University of Washington researchers, the new system uses smart sensors placed on light poles to function as a warning system for areas where the trail crosses roadways. "Smart Road Stickers," as the researchers at UW's STAR Lab have dubbed them, will send safety warnings to the phones of both pedestrians and drivers.
So far, the stickers will only detect cellphones with the STAR Lab's detection app installed, but they do have the ability to communicate with vehicles.
So while pedestrians and bikers will get notified via a smartphone, drivers will get an alert on their car system (which makes sense, given that the technology is based on the same systems used by cars to sense other cars).
