Bill Gates -- I'm voting yes on Initiative 1631, the fee on greenhouse gas emissions
Bill Gates is supporting Initiative 1631, the ballot proposal that would create a fee on emissions that cause global warming and encourage and help underwrite development of clean energy in Washington.
"If I-1631 passes, it will create the first state fee of its kind in the United States," Gates wrote in a post on LinkedIn. He is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and co-founder of Microsoft.
"Going first is never easy, but Washington has a history of pioneering new ideas . . . Passing 1631 would help Washington become a hub for innovative work on clean energy and climate. If you want to be an innovator in this field -- whether you want to do academic research, start a company or both -- you will want to do it here."
Gates did not take on major oil companies, which have built a $21 million war chest to fight the initiative.
He will advocate in other ways. "I will contribute to the Yes on I-1631 campaign," he wrote. "I will vote yes when I fill out my ballot, and I will encourage others to do the same thing."
