Connelly: Dino Rossi, 59, named as one of Republicans' 'Young Guns'
Dino Rossi, 59, a three-time statewide office seeker, has been named one of its "young guns" by the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Rossi now carries Republican hopes to hold the 8th Congressional District seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash.
The Republicans are gunning to hold Reichert's seat. He has raised millions, taken money from Vice President Mike Pence's political action committee and won backing from the ultraconservative Club for Growth.
A SuperPAC associated with House Speaker Paul Ryan has reserved millions of local TV time for the fall, and set up shop in the 8th District as well as the 5th District of endangered Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.
But a "young gun?"
Rossi is a grandfather. He has been running for office for two decades. He lost 2004 and 2008 gubernatorial races to Christine Gregoire, and was defeated by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. in 2010. He has three times held Washington State Senate seats, once by election and twice by appointment.
The "young guns" is being treated rather liberally.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has identified 11 candidates for its list. They range from genuinely young candidates -- Young Kim is seeking to hold the California House seat of retiring Rep. Ed Royce -- to politicians who have been around the track.
