The Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the only portion of the historic spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth, will be exhibited at Seattle's Museum of Flight to mark the 50th anniversary of the mission.
The iconic space capsule will leave the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum for the first time in four decades as part of a two-year traveling exhibition called Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission. Visitors will learn "the story of human exploration of the moon, from ancient dreams to the Apollo program to the missions happening right now."
The Museum of Flight will be the last of four destinations for the exhibit during the national tour that starts in April 2018 and ends in 2019, museum spokesman Ted Huetter said.
The exhibition comes to the Seattle museum between March 16 and Sept. 2, 2019 for the only West Coast destination of the tour, Huetter added.
