Inslee calls Trump order cruelty; protests at Sea-Tac
SEATTLE Gov. Jay Inslee blasted President Donald Trumps executive order banning people from certain Muslim-majority nations as unjustifiable cruelty, and more than 1,000 pro-immigration protesters gathered Saturday in the arrivals area at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Attorneys from the ACLU and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project said a Somali national was not allowed to enter and two other people were detained at the airport.
The Seattle radio station KUOW reported that as many as 13 people had been detained at Sea-Tac due to the executive order, citing lawyers who said they were representing the families.
Everetts mayor said Trumps position was inconsistent with how people think in Snohomish Countys largest city.
President Trumps immigration ban is inconsistent with our values as a country and as a community, Mayor Ray Stephanson said. We cannot close our doors to the most vulnerable among us, including those who have been persecuted for their faith. Everett will continue to be a welcoming, safe city for all of our residents, no matter their country of origin.
The protest at SeaTac followed a press conference that included Inslee and airport officials. Accommodations were being made for the families of those detained who were waiting for updates, reporters were told. The exact number had not been confirmed by authorities.
