As many as 282 Whatcom County voters may have had their names fraudulently signed to petitions for the referendum seeking to overturn gay marriage ...

Washington State Patrol is investigating about 1,000 signatures on 51 petition sheets submitted by a paid signature gatherer. The state Secretary of State's Office recently released the signatures to the public.

The office isolated all petition sheets submitted by the woman, and they weren't included in the signature check, Secretary of State spokesman Dave Ammons said.

Referendum 74 qualified for the November ballot. The group backing it, Preserve Marriage Washington, submitted roughly twice the minimum number of signatures needed to qualify ...

...examples of good guys and bad guys both tampering with the ballot box.

What is required is a national initiative to: (1) accurately register every eligible voter; (2) remove all corporate monies from the electoral process; (3) provide federal initiatives for voting, i.e., Election Day a national holiday; and (4) institute severe penalties for electoral fraud, voter intimidation, tampering and rigging.
