Gateway Pacific Terminal nixed.

Last edited Tue May 10, 2016, 02:19 AM - Edit history (1)

The Army Corps of Engineers delivered an historic decision to deny necessary permits for SSA Marine’s proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal, a coal export facility at Xwe’chi’eXen, also known as Cherry Point, Washington. The Army Corps agreed with the Lummi Nation that building a 48 million ton per year coal terminal would have adverse impacts upon the Lummi Nation's fishing rights and way of life.

Thank the Army Corps today for doing their duty by upholding treaty rights and honoring the US government’s commitment to those treaties.

By denying permits for the largest proposed coal export terminal in North America, the Army Corps is upholding the Lummi Nation’s treaty rights and protecting the Salish Sea for all people who call the Pacific Northwest home.

This win is a testament to the power and leadership of the Lummi Nation and the dedication of supporters like you. You, along with thousands of concerned families, health professionals, business leaders, tribes, affected communities and local elected leaders have helped make this happen.

We celebrate this landmark victory but we are not done yet - we will continue to fight until our communities are no longer threatened by these dangerous coal export proposals. Specifically, we will leave no stone unturned in our opposition to Millennium Bulk Logistics in Longview and the Fraser Surrey project in British Columbia.
