'It is unconscionable:' Seattle biz group fears 'Jungle' fires could devastate I-5

SEATTLE -- A fire under the freeway in Seattle may have been put out quick enough this week, but critics say there's a bigger blaze brewing.

"They need to move people out from under the highway who have large amounts of propane tanks under there ready to blow up," said Eugene Wasserman, a Seattle businessman. "The government -- whether it's state, city, local -- are failing to deal with the significant risk to the greater community."

Wasserman is president of the North Seattle Industrial Association, which represents dozens of business owners in maritime and shipping around Seattle. After reading the city's assessment of the homeless encampment known as "The Jungle," Wasserman penned a letter to the Senate Transportation Committee, asking them to address the fire risk from groups of propane tanks found under the freeway.

"It is unconscionable that WSDOT leadership will let this occur," Wasserman wrote, noting a "potential devastating impact it could have on I-5."

That's why they want to attack the WSDOT leadership to try and give another instance to make Inslee's cabinet look like they can't manage.
