'Social housing' initiative will be on the Seattle February ballot

King County Elections on Friday issued "a certificate of sufficiency" for a "social housing" initiative that would create a public developer of affordable housing in the city of Seattle.

Soaring rents plus backing by labor and a host of community organizations add up to a good shot for passage of Initiative 135 when it's on the Feb. 14 ballot.

However, the Housing Development Consortium (HDC) this spring said in a statement it is concerned that I-135 "distracts funds and energy away from" scaling up affordable housing development.

"We do not need another government entity to build housing when there are already insufficient resources to fund existing entities," reads the statement.
