Seattle City Council moves forward with cuts to police budget; final vote expected next week

On Thursday morning, Seattle City Council members discussed their plan to cut the Seattle Police Department (SPD) budget, saying it is about divesting from the police and investing in the community. That is what protesters have been calling for in the uprising that has happened since George Floyd's death in Minneapolis.

When it comes to the council taking action to defund police, there have only been initial votes on a series of amendments. More discussion on the proposals and a full council vote is expected next week.

Council President Lorena González said she's ready to talk about proposals to cut SPD's budget with the police chief and mayor.

González said the invitation has been sent "in the last 48 hours with a multitude of dates and times to be able to come together."
