It's pretty suspicious when there are plenty of RW and sports stations but Liberals need to buy a device and pay a fee to listen.

I began listening to AM1090 at midnight the day it began. I listened almost 24/7. NPR just ain't doin' it. I miss Thom, Stephie, Randi, Norm, Mike, Pap, all the others, even the gardening show. I am listening online to the Chicago station ~ but this does not transport to my old '92 Honda's radio, lol.

I would not only sign the petition, while I live in Kenmore (Seattle native tho), I would go to a meet up or whatever there would be. I was so happy when this station began and was a loyal listener. While I am low income I tried to support whatever advertising there was when I could afford it ~ and recommended the services to others.

I wrote to the CBS execs but never even got an automatic email back. I am wondering what CBS execs are thinking in NYC to change this station to sports ~ when we already have a lot of sports stations. I bet their ratings are now in the toilet, and they knew this would happen. What is this all about? Are they mad they lost their Romney influence and thinking Progressive Radio is "brain washing" the public with true facts or something?

I gave up on NPR years ago, now I see why again... And I used to donate to PBS and NPR. No more, after listening to that weak tea, and on weak signal too. I can give straight to Free Speech and Pacifica.

If I can get reception, I listen to Democracy Now! and Thom Hartmann - that's it. Silence is better than pap.

6. Peter Collins on progressive talk radio

Ratings range from flat to flat-lined: in 2012, Clear Channel-owned KPOJ in Portland and CBS-owned KPTK in Seattle showed audience numbers so low that they were not listed by Arbitron; Clear Channel's WDTW in Detroit barely showed a pulse at .1 percent, and the once-powerhouse, now-struggling media conglomerate recently agreed to donate WDTW to a local community group. In his second attempt at WVKO in Columbus, Ohio, Gary Richards was forced to sign off just before Christmas 2012. Progressive talker Jeff Santos waged a valiant four-year struggle in Boston, and I was a consultant in his effort last year to add eight new markets in battleground states; we had no choice but to lease air time, and once again the Democrats who had the most to gain failed to support the effort.

The only exception I've found is Madison, Wisconsin, market #100, where Clear Channel's WXXM-FM, "The Mic" jumped a full share point to a respectable 3.3 this fall. Back in 2006, a local group led by activist Aldous Tyler rallied support, and a planned format change was halted. Similar efforts are underway in Seattle and in Portland, where longtime KPOJ morning host Carl Wolfson has just launched a live webstream show weekday mornings 7-9 AM Pacific. It's worth noting that Arbitron has switched to a "people meter" system that has produced lower numbers for talk programming in general and progressive talk in particular.

Al Franken is in the Senate, Ed Schultz appears to be doing well on MSNBC, Thom Hartmann has a nightly TV show on the RT network, Bill Press and Stephanie Miller are simulcast on Current TV (which has just been sold to Al Jazeera). But their radio shows face tough sledding and possible elimination in 2013.

As someone who took substantial personal risk in syndication and station ownership, I can tell you that progressive talk has not panned out as a viable business. Clinton's 1996 deregulation of broadcasting and the end of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 didn't help. I do think the FCC should require some balance of viewpoints on the stations it regulates, through the license renewal process, but there is simply no interest on the part of Obama and his appointees in regulatory reform - even as the president is pilloried by right-wing radio on a daily basis. Air America's parade of management blunders produced the downward spiral that brought us to this tipping point for progressive talk radio, and most station owners, rightly or wrongly, see that failure as an indication that audiences won't support liberal talk radio.

In radio, we always like to end on an upbeat note. Here's the best I can muster: if you want to help keep the surviving progressive talk shows alive, subscribe to the podcasts of your favorite progressive hosts - it's a critical stream of revenue as these programs fight for survival.

7. Meeting with former KPTK advertising insider

Meeting with a KPTK Insider

Our Progressive Radio in Seattle (PRS) Team had a meeting this past week with a former advertising sales person for KPTK who provided us with some interesting information about the demise of 1090 Progressive Talk.

•1090 has been owned by CBS since its inception and was the only progressive talk station owned by CBS in the country.
• CBS chose to not spend any money on advertising for KPTK and did minimal guerilla marketing for promotion.
•When KPOJ in Portland first became a progressive talk station, they spent money on advertising and it did well for the first year.

9. Report on meetinf of 3/20

Our PRS Team had a meeting on March 20th and we spent the majority of our time discussing our new website that is being created. It will be ready for public access in about a month after most of the major content is in place. It will include a history, mission (Why local public radio is still needed despite all of the new technology), ways to access progressive talk shows through the web, ways for people to become involved, and other progressive radio news.

We are still working on making a contact at the Seattle Times and with Senator Maria Cantwell’s office. With our SignOn petition at over 9,500 signatures, we are still looking at the best way to have an impact in the delivery of the signatures. If you have any contacts with local radio stations or newspapers who may have an interest in what we’re doing, please let Carolyn know. Station Manager, Bruce Bond says his station can be heard "from Seattle to Olympia," and adds that "We have terrestrial listeners that tune in regularly and report good reception in Burien, Silverdale, Kent, Factoria and Georgetown." The station also streams at klay1180.com.

Bruce Worth the Program Manager for KBCS reports that, following five years of patience and persistence, KBCS is now broadcasting from its new location atop Cougar Mountain. At 1400 feet above sea level, the signal coverage has increased over 40% and reaches more than 2.5 million potential listeners across the Puget Sound. Their signal can now be heard as far east as Fall City, as far south as Tacoma, west to Poulsbo and the Kitsap Peninsula, and north up to Everett.

Thom Hartmann is heard weekdays from noon to 3 PM; Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now is on three times at 6 AM, 8AM and 5 PM.

Steph and the Mooks - KLAY AM 1180 has changed, and is now airing Stephanie Miller "live" 6:00 - 9:00 AM. According to Bruce of KLAY (I called him), Stephanie prefers to air during the live show time slot because they get listeners calling into her show! Lots of people will be happy to hear of this change, especially those who listen while getting ready for work, and those who can tune in to the station while commuting.

Thom Hartmann is still airing on KLAY AM 1180, 4:00-7:00 PM, and KBCS 91.3 FM, Noon-3:00 PM.

A team of people have volunteered to plan the 1090 Listener Rally. We will hear more soon!

NPR has some progressive offerings, but its highest ranked programs are mostly news shows and conversation programs with broad appeal. And most of the time NPR is much too well-behaved to get a person all stirred up.

There’s room for a little passion in media. Sometimes you want a laugh, sometimes you want to share indignation. Sometimes we all want to know that someone else sees the same craziness we’re seeing.

Some news is just absurd and mainstream media don’t capture that well. They play everything straight no matter how ridiculous.

Think about the popularity of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher on television. Of course, they’re all comedians. Serious commentators on the left don’t often have the same bite as those on the right.

Tamler said she’s tried to listen to commentators across the spectrum, but finds the ones on the right too acerbic, and of course she doesn’t agree with them anyway. So she’s going to continue her quest.

These days she and her friends could always stream progressive talk over the Internet, or sign up for a podcast or a politically acceptable Twitter feed, but Tamler says she likes to listen to the radio as she drives around the island, and she wants it to be her local station.

The Telecom Act of '96 was one of the worst things to happen to radio, and that was on top of a trend that was already going downhill. We really need to demand Congress finally understand that the airwaves belong to all of us, and those using the bandwidth need to have some real public interest obligations to their communities. When we allowed the media to be only about making money, things went downhill fast!

13. Fisher family investment in progressive radio?

Information about the sale of Fisher Communications to Sinclair

Fisher Communications, owner of Seattle’s KOMO-TV and 19 other television stations, will be acquired for $373 million by Sinclair Broadcast Group, the country’s largest Fox affiliate. Sinclair said it plans to keep Fisher’s three Seattle radio stations — KOMO Newsradio, KPLZ STAR 101.5 and KVI 570 — even though its focus is TV. In a recent conversation with someone who knows the Fisher family, I learned that the family only owns 30% of the stock in what is now a publicly traded company. So, the decision to go ahead with this sale to a highly conservative media group is in the hands of the Fisher stockholders. The Fisher family does have a long-time reputation as liberal (Dan Evans) Republicans, a species that may no longer exist, but there may be some hope that the family will want to purchase a station that could become a new progressive broadcasting station in the Seattle Area. We can hope.

Julia Chase, Phil Harrison and Larisa Wanserski were on hand to represent the Progressive Radio Seattle Team (PRS). They welcomed the party planning group and invited each of the attendees to introduce themselves and share why they think it’s vital to bring a progressive radio station back to Seattle.

Julia & Phil gave a brief recap about the activities of the PRS team in the last several months and Larisa expressed the team’s belief in the value of securing a terrestrial radio station as well as providing ongoing support and publicity for progressive voices currently on digital and satellite technologies. The team reported that a number of different business models are being explored and that a PRS website is being developed for public launch in the coming weeks.

Promoting Progressive Talk on the Public Airwaves and Beyond!

PRS is a group of volunteers working to:

1. Bring progressive radio back to Seattle
2. Promote awareness/support of progressive radio on the free public airwaves and complementary technologies

The group had a general discussion about the purpose of the proposed Reunion/Rally. The event could:

focus enthusiasm
generate a larger body of people
prove we exist and we are serious
give voice to the people
promote progressive values
support advertisers who had supported AM1090 Progressive Talk

The group then turned to general logistical concerns. It was decided that, given all the planning that needed to be accomplished, the event should be scheduled for late September/early October. Other regional events should be researched to avoid possible conflicts and to also create a list of events where the PRS team could have a marketing/outreach presence. It was decided that the attendance goal should be from 100 to 300 people.

Since progressive radio listeners live across such a wide region, it was suggested that a series of smaller, localized events take place leading up to the big Reunion/Rally. The “Progressive Progressive Dinner” would take place on different nights throughout the greater Seattle area – organized and hosted by different people in their homes. It would be a terrific way to build enthusiasm and awareness in the weeks leading to the main event.

Various attendees are researching possible facilities through the Seattle Parks system and area Labor groups. Vivian McPeak, director of Seattle’s Hempfest http://www.hempfest.org/ shared an especially helpful and informative message of encouragement for our efforts. He noted that the Hempfest blog would be an appropriate publicity outlet.

The group did not break into sub workgroups as planned, but continued a general discussion of other specific planning topics: Program, Food/Beverages, Marketing/Publicity, Community Outreach and Administration. Many people expressed that the event should have some sort of appropriate educational component -- handouts and a literature table at minimum.

The group also needs to decide how finances will be handled. The PRS team is NOT an official entity so it cannot accept formal donations. Several possibilities are being pursued to resolve this important issue.

The PRS team will contact the folks who signed up to work on a particular subgroup or to help with the database and other administrative duties. Lorraine Jones offered to set up a private facebook page that the party planning group can use to share information.

The planners decided that it would be important to meet in person every two weeks; other possible meeting places will be researched and meetings will be scheduled in different locations to accommodate as much geographic diversity as possible.

Thanks so much to everyone who came to our very first Progressive Radio Party Planning meeting -- and especially to Lorraine for taking such excellent notes! It was very gratifying to hear so many heartfelt personal expressions of support for local terrestrial radio. It's worth the fight, eh?

It was a terrific session and I thing we got a good start on planning our Reunion/Rally. In the next several days, you'll receive a meeting recap with a rundown of ways to get involved.

I am concerned about the obvious effort made across the nation to eliminate equitable access to the airwaves. regionally we have witnessed two major markets, Portland and Seattle simultaneously losing their only progressive radio access through acquisition by a group replacing the format with sports talk radio in a market already saturated by such. We are looking into collaborating with Northwest Progressive Institute

Andrew Villeneuve, American political activist and entrepreneur and founder of NW Progressive Institute (http://www.nwprogressive.org/), attended our meeting at the recommendation of Chip Hanauer. NPI does media, outreach, advocacy and research for progressive causes. Andrew shared thoughts and contacts that might make our collaboration effective.

We are all invited to NPI's 10th annual picnic, Aug. 22, Perrigo Park in Redmond! We are planning to have a table there to let more people know about what we’re doing.

Planning for an event in Seattle

A group of volunteers had their first planning meeting for Progressive Radio Seattle (PRS) Reunion/Rally Planning on June 5. They want to create an event in the early fall. If you are interested in helping with this or being involved in any way, please contact: [e-mail]

We are actively building our Progressive Radio Seattle website, and we plan to have it go live this summer.

We have a volunteer who has offered to help with our database. We also have business people, legal experts, event planners, radio and media personalities and progressive radio advocates who have been meeting with us and sharing their skills and ideas.

The PRS team is cooking on a number of nifty projects leading up to the launch of our website next month. Please contact us asap at [e-mail] if you can sign up for any of the following:

•Help design and write snappy copy for Progressive Radio Seattle Marketing Collateral
Seeking the volunteer services of a graphic designer who can collaborate to provide a strong look for the materials we will be passing out at events next month (simple brochure, etc.) and other marketing collateral down the road. We also welcome input by copywriters who have experience creating a compelling branding concept/tagline, etc.

21. Volunteer at Hempfest and NPI picnic

We’ve changed our name … announcing Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW)!

We decided that limiting our name to Progressive Radio Seattle was just too, well, limiting! We’ve heard from enthusiastic progressive radio listeners from every corner of the region and wanted our name to reflect the scope and intensity of the public commitment to bring progressive talk BACK to free public airwaves and beyond.

**Hempfest (http://www.hempfest.org/) is this weekend and it sure would be swell to have a team of progressive radio enthusiasts on hand to pass out some nifty oversized postcards we’ve created headlined, “Don’t let progressive radio go up in smoke!” We need someone to coordinate the effort and folks to hand out the cards on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Let us know your preference.

** Northwest Progressive Institute Tenth Anniversary Picnic Next Thursday, August 22

Celebrate NPI’s first decade as you enjoy games, music and some serious picnic eats including all-natural hot dogs, gardenburgers, salmonburgers and a plethora of appetizers and side dishes. King County Executive Dow Constantine and Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire are scheduled to speak.

People should not feel obligated to bring their own food, but they can bring lawn chairs or blankets or whatever they'd like to make themselves comfortable. The event is FREE, and the institute will be accepting at-will donations to help defray expenses.

Thanks to all who already signed up to volunteer at the PRNW table – we’ll be handing out information about progressive radio. EVERYONE is welcome to come enjoy the picnic.

About the Speaker
Geov Parrish has served as national political columnist for Working Assets, a contributing editor for In These Times, Alternet.org, and MotherJones.com, and for over a decade was the local political columnist for Seattle Weekly and The Stranger newspapers.

Since 1996, he has had a popular weekly political show on Seattle's KEXP Radio. Also in 1996, he founded and continues to help publish and edit the community newspaper Eat the State!. His syndicated commentaries have run in newspapers, radio stations, magazines and online throughout the country.

Prior to his writing career, Parrish had a long career in both the programming and business sides of the radio industry. In 1984, he founded a broadcast trade publishing and research company that was one of the first to offer national comprehensive FCC, technical, ownership, and programming research; that company continues today as a division of Clear Channel Communications. He was also, over 15 years, a DJ and program host, program director, development director, and part-owner in both commercial and community radio prior to his KEXP show. He holds an A.M. in Political Science and East Asian Studies from the Univ. of British Columbia, and lives in Seattle with his partner, Gavin.

24. Is low power radio part of the answer?

A rare window of opportunity will soon open. Local communities nationwide will have the chance to tear open the drapes, roll up the blinds, throw that window wide open and shout out to the surrounding region and potentially worldwide.

A Low Power FM radio band could soon be at your fingertips. From October 15 to 19, the Federal Communications Commission will be accepting applications from folks who’d like to fire up their own radio station.

A couple of caveats: these stations cannot be used for commercial purposes, nor can they be run by individuals. It generally takes a village of volunteers to get one of these LPFM critters on the air—a nonprofit village, to be precise.

And these stations are only allowed to broadcast at a level of 100 watts, hence the name “Low Power.” So your geographical footprint of reception would only be a few miles. Enough to serve a local community.

But with Internet streaming readily available, the sky’s potentially the limit.

26. KXRY, progressive talk and NW music, to start in Portland

And we're delighted to share the terrific news from our friends from Blue Oregon about Carl Wolfson's return to the Portland airwaves:

When Clear Channel killed KPOJ's progressive talk radio, thousands of Oregonians lost access to a lot of great progressive talk. People pulled together and built the Save KPOJ movement and helped Carl Wolfson back behind the mic, with an internet radio show.

Now, it's time to take this to the next level. Progressive talk radio is coming to the FM dial in Portland: KXRY -- to be known as XRAY.¬FM will be a combination of progressive talk radio and music from the Northwest. It's a local, not-for-profit radio station.

Soon Portland Area residents willl be able to hear Carl Wolfson and Thom Hartmann on their FM dial. Before that happens, XRAY.-FM will soon be available online, so everyone in Oregon will be able to enjoy this new progressive radio station.

Progressive talk radio is coming back!
