Inslee extends statewide eviction moratorium to October

Gov. Jay Inslee announced on Thursday that the state will extend the eviction moratorium until Oct. 15.

The moratorium, which was set to expire on Aug. 1, prevents people from losing their homes because they can't pay their rents amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

"This is meant to protect renters from falling into homelessness if they're struggling," Inslee said. "If you can pay rent, obviously, we need you to pay rent. This is for the folks who are really in tough times."

Under the eviction moratorium, landlords can't increase residential rents and need to offer tenants a repayment plan. Landlords also can't charge late fees under the moratorium. People can still be evicted for other reasons, such as property damage or criminal behavior.
