1. GRAND OPENING POSTPONED!
Tue Jan 29, 2013, 07:44 PM
Jan 2013

Our grand reopening of Coffee Strong set for this Saturday, February 2nd, has been postponed due to permitting issues with the City of Lakewood. On behalf of everyone at GI Voice, please accept my apology for this late change. We’ve been eagerly looking forward to this opening since our Board of Directors first put this date on our calendar back in December. However, in order to expedite resolution of this dispute with the city, we have decided to postpone the opening.

We are working to resolve this dispute as soon as possible, and will be in touch when we have a firm opening date and celebration. Thank you for your support of GI Voice over the past year, and we look forward to celebrating our reopening with you soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at alex@givoice.org or on my cell phone at 206-604-2285.

In Solidarity,

Alex Bacon
Co-Director, GI Voice

P.S. – We’re moving full speed ahead to be ready for our reopening. Over the past month we’ve been holding weekly volunteer trainings on topics ranging from suicide prevention to supporting service members seeking a way out of the military. We’ve also participated in a counter recruitment training and have supported efforts by Seattle area peace and justice groups to help cut war spending. Check your inboxes later this week for reports about this and much more!

I’m excited to announce the opening of our new and expanded Coffee Strong on Monday, April 1st! We’ll be celebrating our expansion on Saturday, April 13th from 2pm to 4pm (RSVP here). In recognition of your past support of Coffee Strong, we’d like to recognize you as a Coffee Strong Plank Owner at the celebration.

Plank owner is a naval term for members of a ship who are part of the original crew. As a Coffee Strong plank owner you’ll receive a plank owner certificate, and your name will be listed on a permanent display at Coffee Strong along with a group photo to be taken on the 13th.

At the end of 2012 we said goodbye to our home since 2008. By closing our commercial coffee shop and reopening exclusively as a military and veteran rights center, we’ll be better able to provide advocacy and support to service members and veterans standing up against the military and challenging militarism in our communities. By engaging veterans in providing this advocacy we are building our community of anti-war veterans and preparing to directly challenge the next Iraq or Afghanistan.

In addition to free coffee, alternative information, computers and free internet we’ll have office space for our staff and volunteers and meeting rooms for confidential conversations with service members and veterans.

Thank you for your support of our work. Please RSVP online for our celebration on April 13th, or call me at 253-581-1565. Together we can stand up for service members’ and veterans’ rights while challenging war and militarism.
