Should Kitsap County apply to reopen sooner? Kitsap Health Board to hold meeting Wednesday

The Kitsap Public Health Board will hold a special meeting next Wednesday afternoon to consider whether Kitsap County should apply for more speedy reopening.

The meeting is a crucial step in applying for a variance to the governor's four-part coronavirus recovery plan, which, if successful, would allow Kitsap to move into phase two sooner than other parts of the state.

The virtual meeting will be held May 27 from 1 to 2 p.m, with the opportunity for the public to listen online or by phone. People can submit verbal comments during the meeting or provide written comments via email, letter or online before the meeting. The public health board recommends providing comments prior to the meeting in anticipation of a high volume of participation.

Kitsap residents split on how soon to safely reopen

Reopening has been a hot-button issue for local leaders and the community at-large, with residents split about when Kitsap should reopen businesses and how to do it safety. As states across the country have started open up businesses and other parts of society, health experts have warned about the dangers of reopening too soon and the virus rebounding without a vaccine yet nor proven treatment.
