Washingtonians protest statewide fishing ban at Seattle rally

SEATTLE – As Justin Johnson unloaded his boat at the Mercer Island boat launch Sunday, he was still trying to make sense of Gov. Jay Inslee’s ban on recreational fishing under the state’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order.

“Fishing is what I do,” said Johnson who made the trip down from Tulalip. “It’s been pretty tough just not being able to get out.”

He runs a bass fishing club and says not being able to get out on the water and cast his rod is discouraging. Like other fishermen, he says it’s an outdoor activity that can be done with plenty of social distancing.

“Trust us to do the right thing and that’s to keep ourselves and the people around us safe," he says.

Joined by dozens of other boaters, Johnson made the trip through the Montlake Cut to Lake Union where a “Let Us Fish” rally was held on Sunday afternoon. Supporters greeted them from Gas Works Park.

“It’s very sad because Washington has a lot of fishermen,” said Jun Leano. He made the trip from Port Orchard.

I’m sure fishing wasn’t even a thought. Perhaps the governor will look at it. The process is difficult and looking at every aspect of living is impossible when making quick life saving decisions.

I just wish the people that want to fish would have gone a different route. Perhaps a call to the governors office. I guess they may have but no need for trying to embarrass the governor over this.
