With lacking testing data, Kitsap health officials look at new ways to track coronavirus' spread

With the number of new COVID-19 cases dropping in recent weeks, Kitsap public health officials are working to find new ways to track the virus’ spread as wide-spread testing for the virus remains limited nationwide.

There have been only six new confirmed cases in the last seven days, bringing Kitsap County’s total up to 146 known COVID-19 cases, including two deaths, as of Saturday afternoon. In the first week of April, by comparison, Kitsap saw more than 50 new COVID-19 cases — which marked the most of any seven-day period to this point, according to the Kitsap Public Health District.

Kitsap Health Officer Susan Turner says the data shows a decline in new cases — which could indicate public health measures are helping to slow down the virus’ spread and fewer people are getting sick — but cautioned against drawing broad, definite conclusions about the coronavirus’ trajectory.
