Seattle to close 6 more miles of streets to cars starting this weekend
Seattle is closing six more miles of streets to traffic starting this weekend so people can have more room to socially distance while walking or exercising outside.
The additional six miles expands on the the city's announcement last week that streets in the Central District, West Seattle and High Point, and Green Lake would be opening up for people to use to walk, run and bike. Beginning Friday, streets in Greenwood, Othello and Rainier Beach, and Beacon Hill are being added to the mix, creating a total of nine miles of "Stay Healthy Streets."
"Streets were selected to amplify outdoor exercise opportunities for areas with limited open space options, low car ownership and routes connecting people to essential services and food take out," the Seattle Department of Transportation said in a post on its blog.
The street closures are meant to help people keep stay six feet apart at all times while outside to further slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. But city officials are warning people shouldn't take this as an opportunity to have gatherings at parks or open streets. People who use the open streets or parks are to "keep it moving."
