Iyad Burnat, nonviolent activist from Bil'in on the West Bank, has been on tour in the U.S. since November. He will be in Tacoma on January 12th. Participate in an evening about Palestinian Nonviolent Resistance, including an award-winning film, Palestinian food, and personal stories & photos from this visiting Palestinian resistance leader.

And yet, 40 years after the fact, women are still fighting for their rights.

To that end, I'm starting a progressive salon series - I'll be inviting interesting speakers to come chat with us about issues of importance while we expand our understanding and enjoy the company of friends old and new.
The first salon will be Saturday, Feb 9 from 2-4 pm at the Snoqualmie Library. We'll be talking about the financial crisis, banks, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Dodd-Frank financial legislation, and where we can go from here with former Congressman Brad Miller, who was on the House Financial Services Committee and introduced the original legislation in the House to create the CFPB. Helping to host the session will be my friend David Goldstein (Goldy), who writes for The Stranger.

The City of Seattle has a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. We're talking net zero carbon emissions, a pretty bold step. And the city is developing a climate action plan to achieve this goal, prepare for the impacts of a changing climate, and make Seattle an even better place to live.
Recently, a group of 26 community, environmental, and business leaders, the Green Ribbon Commission, recommended a series of actions to include in this new plan. The Commission's recommendations include both short-term and longer-term actions that will help make Seattle more resilient, equitable, prosperous, and environmentally sustainable.

What: Wells Fargo is one of the "Dirty 30" big corporations that pay $0 in taxes while lobbying for permanent tax breaks and cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. The only way to stop them is to expose their tax-dodging practices and to call on our Senators to take action to ensure that corporations pay their fair share.
Where: Meet at the Working Washington office: 215 Columbia Street, in downtown Seattle. The entrance to the Working Washington office is on 3rd and Columbia. We will walk 2 blocks to the bank and then one block from there to the Federal Building.
Why Wells Fargo?
Wells Fargo is one of the Dirty 30: behemoths that collectively earned tens of billions in profits between 2008 and 2010 but paid no taxes during that three-year period. These companies "so deftly exploited carve outs and loopholes in the tax code that all but one of them enjoyed a negative tax rate"-that is, they received money back from the U.S. Treasury.
The Dirty 30 have spent millions to get the tax code the way it is, and will likely spend millions more to keep it that way. In the three years studied by Citizens for Tax Justice, the 30 spent nearly half a billion dollars on lobbying Congress.
Together the 30, which include Wells Fargo, Mattel, Verizon, GE, and other well-known corporate brands, collected $10.6 billion in tax rebates during the three years Citizens for Tax Justice studied. Many of the companies on the list claim tax rebates while avoiding taxes altogether by parking profits in overseas shelters.
In total, the top 30 companies dodged $67.9 billion in taxes over three years, costs that are passed on to American taxpayers and small businesses that lack the teams of tax analysts necessary to exploit loopholes in the code. Spread out over every individual tax filer in America, the taxes avoided by the Dirty Thirty break down to an average of $481 per taxpayer over the three years.
We will call on Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to make sure big corporations like Wells Fargo - and their wealthy executives - pay their fair share in taxes.
Conservatives in Congress want the middle class to pay for deficit reduction by cutting Social Security benefits, Medicare and Medicaid while refusing to close tax loopholes or end tax breaks for millionaires and corporations.
We need Congress to:
- End tax breaks and cap deductions that benefit the richest 2 percent.
- Place a tiny tax on Wall Street transactions to raise revenue while curbing dangerous financial gambling
- Oppose corporate "territorial" tax proposals that would exempt big corporations from paying taxes on profits earned overseas, and end tax breaks that allow multinational corporations to ship jobs and profits overseas to foreign tax havens like the Cayman Islands.

Ignoring ten years of war and tax cuts for the wealthy (both purchased on the national credit card), as well as a pandemic of Wall Street greed that nearly sunk the American economy, they pointed their finger at America’s last stronghold of economic safety: Social Security. Now, one well-known economist has had enough – and he’s visiting Washington state to talk about how to defend and improve Social Security for future generations.

Join me in celebrating Black History Month by welcoming Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr., one of the preeminent authorities on non-violent social change. Dr. Lafayette first got involved in the civil rights movement as a student in Nashville, Tennessee in 1960. As a student leader he travelled to North Carolina, where he, John Lewis, and other Black student activist founded of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). As a SNCC activist Dr. Lafayette participated in many sit-ins and freedom rides that got him tossed in jails throughout the South. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. appointed Dr. LaFayette as the National Program Administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and National Coordinator of the 1968 Poor Peoples’ Campaign.
Dr. LaFayette is a distinguished Senior Scholar In-Residence at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and is considered America’s foremost authority on Dr. King’s principles—called Kingian principles—for building effective, non-violent social change movements. He travels around the country and world as a lecturer, strategist and consultant helping people develop viable race and social justice initiatives based on Dr. King’s teachings.
Dr. LaFayette will discuss the Kingian Principles of Nonviolence, the implementation of the Poor People’s Campaign, and community organizing and engagement at
Seattle’s Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He will share strategies and present his historical perspective to help improve the quality of life for all our residents:

The temporary congestion reduction charge staved off these cuts but it expires in 2014. To make matters worse, state funds which pay for transit service during the Alaskan Way Viaduct construction run out next year too - two years before the construction ends!

On Monday, February 25th at 2:30pm, Seattle City Council Committee on South Lake Union is scheduled to discuss affordable housing incentives. Help us pack City Hall with affordable housing supporters!
Over the past several months, City Council has heard from Puget Sound Sage, community and allies that modest-wage workers should be able to afford to live near where they work. It is now time to show City Council we support Just Growth!
Puget Sound Sage believes that developers should pay their fair share to help build a Seattle where all families can thrive. That is why we have signed our name to support rezoning that includes affordable homes in South Lake Union!
We all know our current incentive zoning and the current package will not meet our region's goals for growth.
We cannot make the mistake of the past and settle for programs that do not do enough. We have an opportunity to move towards a vision of multi-racial, mixed income sustainable communities thriving along our high capacity corridors because zoning is fundamentally about creating public value.
Come to the meeting on February 25th, and show your support of Just Growth. Help us show City Council that we need leadership on equitable development and it starts with strengthening incentive zoning to create more affordable homes in South Lake Union.

She then testified on the importance of private insurance covering contraception before a House Democratic Committee, and despite ongoing attacks, continues to speak out today.

Bill was one of the organizers and a passenger on that first flotilla that actually made it to Gaza. Bill is a UPS alumnus. In the mid-80's he was doing his residency in Tacoma and was active in the early group called Tacoma Arabs Jews and Others for Peace. Bill now lives in Eastern Washington and practices medicine. The book is composed of many flotilla passengers' writings and perspectives.

(51,907 posts)Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the Race Across America (RAAM), will premiere for the first time in Seattle at the Harvard Exit Theatre on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. The screening is presented by the Bicycle Alliance of Washington.
The film, which has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, “is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”
We hope you'll join us for this special big screen showing of Bicycle Dreams. In addition to the movie, we will feature a brief presentation by Ben Robinson of Seattle. Ben, a past RAAM participant and former board member of the Bicycle Alliance, will share his personal experience riding this demanding event. There will also be a cash raffle with proceeds benefiting the Bicycle Alliance.

Community leaders and members will make the case to elected officials that a new city ordinance is necessary to create opportunity in the form of local construction jobs. It is time for the City of Seattle to have a "Targeted Local Hire" Ordinance!
The City of Seattle is positioned to create up to 3,000 good, living wage construction jobs annually for the next six years around major public works projects in the area. This is happening while unemployment in the Rainier Valley is increasingly higher than the rest of the City. A healthy portion of these jobs being created need to reach the disadvantaged workers in the most need of employment.
This Saturday, come join community leaders and members in conversation with elected officials in a Targeted Local Hire Ordinance. Our communities should be able to live where they work and have good, local jobs!

She will be in town with a garment worker as part of the “End Death Trap Factories” 10 city nationwide tour. We are collaborating with local coalition partners (Washington Fair Trade Coalition, UW-USAS, and OUR Walmart) to organize local events including: Support for sweat-free purchasing policies for Washington State ; a forum to hear from the Bangladeshi delegation and other workers in Walmart’s supply chain demanding justice; and an action in front of a Walmart store… more details to come! Dr. Peterson is a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize and works at the Pacific Northwest Forest Service Research Station. He has conducted extensive research on the effect of climate change on mountains and forests throughout the western United States and has published more than 200 scientific articles and three books. BACKGROUND: For the past several weeks, volunteer artists have been hard at work creating the art that will bring the march to life. The centerpiece is a "coal train" that will magically transform into a green oasis midway through the march. The children hope to call attention to the proposed Cherry Point coal terminal that is currently being debated as well as to the devastating environmental effects of using coal as a fuel source, no matter where it is burned.
Backbone is proud to have collaborated with Climate Change for Families, Idle No More Washington, Get Money Out of Politics, and the Sierra Club Cascade Chapter to offer this to you.

Celebrate Earth Day and the restoration of our home town river –the Duwamish, with the People For Puget Sound Program at WEC, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, and Earth Corps! This event is part of the Duwamish Alive! Coalition. Volunteers will be gathering at restoration events up and down the river to make a lasting impact on the ecosystem and habitat health of the Duwamish River.
We hope you'll join us for this day of on the ground action. We will pull out invasive plants, replant native plants, lay mulch and celebrate the River!

No experience necessary — we will discuss safety and give an overview of the project. The event will take place rain or shine. Long trousers and long sleeves are helpful where there are blackberries. Bring work gloves and weeding tools if you have them. Bring a refillable water bottle. We will provide work gloves, tools, snacks, and beverages. Children 10 and under must have one-to-one adult supervision.

In just 42 minutes, "Do The Math: The Movie" tells the story of the growing climate movement, from the new fossil fuel divestment campaign to the fight against the Keystone XL pipeline. Check out the preview here to get a sneak peek.
Like everything we do at 350.org, we need people power to make this work. We want this to be the springboard for the big plans we're making for the summer and beyond, which is why we hope to fill hundreds of living rooms and libraries accross the country for this film. Environmental activist and founder of 350.org Bill McKibben will be at The Well to discuss coal, climate change, and the PNW. His group 350.org is so named to highlight the parts per million of carbon that scientists say is the maximum amount allowed for a health and well being. Currently, the parts per million of carbon is much higher and rising. Bill warns of warming oceans, melting ice caps, increased volatility in weather, and the effects this has on all people, especially people who are poor or living in “developing countries.” Bill is leading a movement to divest from oil companies that is sweeping our nation’s colleges and universities. He is one of the most important voices in our country today…on any subject. Seating will be limited.

These are among the 66 people who will be honored this year at the 2013 Worker Memorial Day ceremonies around Washington state next week. Each year on Worker Memorial Day, working people throughout the world remember those who were hurt or killed on the job, and renew our struggle for safe workplaces.
“Each and every day in this country, on average 13 workers die on the job as a result of workplace injuries — women and men who go to work, never to return home to their families and loved ones,” said Jeff Johnson, President of the Washington State Labor Council. “It’s important that we honor their memory and their families, and that we rededicate ourselves each year to improving workplace safety and health.”

Our challenge is to give our children and future generations a solid economic foundation so that all people can have access to opportunity and have enough money to capitalize on their talents and dreams.
Over the past two years, stakeholders from planners to businesses to housing advocates across the region have worked together to identify key actions that are effective in growing equitable transit communities at light rail stations and other high-capacity transit stations. This is perhaps the most important planning effort in two decades.
Now we need you to get involved. A draft of The Growing Transit Communities Strategy is now open for public review and there's a limited time-window for people to weigh-in before The Strategy is finalized.
That's why we're one of eleven organizations co-hosting a special brownbag presentation by Puget Sound Regional Council staff. We want to make sure you're up-to-speed on this important work so you can effectively weigh in.

The King County Council's Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee will hold a special meeting Tuesday, May 14 to take public testimony about potential Metro Transit service cuts. Committee members want to hear how you might be affected by service reductions and your ideas for alternatives.
Metro faces a $75 million annual shortfall and will have to cut service by up to 600,000 hours, or 17 percent, beginning in fall 2014 unless new funding becomes available. Metro has had a severe funding shortage since 2008. So far we have avoided major service reductions by cutting staff positions and programs, raising fares, digging into reserves, and taking many other actions. We've adopted recommendations from a performance audit to save about $22 million annually, and have secured $121 million in grant funding to help develop high-volume RapidRide lines in major travel corridors.
The County adopted a congestion reduction charge to provide supplemental funding for two years while the Legislature considered transportation funding solutions. That charge will run out in mid-2014, and no more reserve funds will be available. If no additional funding is approved, Metro will have to reduce service to close the budget gap.

(51,907 posts)In June of 2011 I flew down to the Bay Area to help support a hunger strike by some California prisoners protesting conditions in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay. I thought it would be about a dozen prisoners participating, each with a hefty supply of food stashed away in their respective cells. I was wrong.
The first hunger strike kicked off on July 1st and was followed by the second one in October of 2011. During the first hunger strike (HS1) the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) publicly admitted that there were 6,600 prisoners on hunger strike in 13 prisons. The number of participants in HS2 peeked at nearly 12,000 (11,898 according to the Office of the Special Master, and slightly less than that, 11,619, according to CDCR’s own figures). Each HS went on for three weeks. There was no food stashed, as CDCR’s written policy is to remove all food from the cell of any prisoner on HS.
To date the CDCR has not met the prisoners’ quite reasonable demands.
On August 12, 2012, California’s leading prisoners issue an “Agreement to End Hostilities”, which was signed by the leadership of all racial groups, and which called for the cessation of all gang hostilities throughout the state. So far that call has been honored. Prisoners are not fighting each other. Instead they are preparing to struggle for justice.
The unified leadership of all races and gangs have issued a call for more than a HS. On July 8th all prisoners in As Seg and SHU units are to stop eating. All mainline (general population) prisoners are instructed to withhold their labor, without which the prisons cannot function.
During HS1 and HS2 there was massive outside support, especially in the Bay Area but to a lesser degree in every major California city. Hunger Strike 3 (HS3) and Work Strike 1 (WS1) will be kicking off in less than two months. The leadership of that struggle has asked for support not only from prisoners in other states, but from community activists from across the nation.
Some friends and I are building that support here in Washington. We call ourselves “Free Us All.” We are holding a meeting of concerned citizens on May 18th, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm, at the American Friends Service Committee’s meeting hall, located at 814 NE 40th Street, Seattle, WA 98105. I would like you to attend this meeting, and to bring as many friends with you as you can.

There are serious problems and public input is essential
Magnuson Park has a contamination problem which hasn't been disclosed to the public for the past four years. And, it is serious - involving radioactive contamination in the soils around, and the building attached to, the hangar housing Arena Sports and the Magnuson Park Athletic Club. There is also contamination in and around Building 2, which had been the indoor soccer facility prior to Arena Sports moving.
Please join me Wednesday evening (May 29th) at a public meeting and open house about the contamination, at The Mountaineers (7700 Sand Point Way NE - enter main park entrance, take immediate left). The Open House with the Navy, Seattle Parks and Washington Ecology begins at 5 PM; and, I have asked them to take questions from you and respond at 7 PM.
The contamination was discovered in 2009 and 2010. However, the Navy, Seattle Parks and WA Dept. of Health agreed amongst themselves not to put up signs which would warn the public that the areas they were fencing off had any contamination problems, or that the building attached to Building 27 (Arena Sports, indoor soccer and the athletic club) had radioactive contamination.
Contamination above safe levels includes radioactive Radium, Strontium and Cesium, in addition to pesticides and lead. The radioactive contamination stems from Navy use of radium paint for dials when the Park was Sand Point Naval Air Station.
Like many of you, my son plays soccer regularly at Building 27 and around the building. We never suspected that the area fenced off around the south end of the building was due to radioactive contamination. Today, the public doesn't expect that there would be contaminated areas outside the fenced area. Yet, the agencies have refused to put up signs noting that the fence is there due to contamination.
Earlier this year, the Navy expected to begin its cleanup without any public review and comment on its cleanup plans. The Washington Department of Ecology, which is supposed to oversee all hazardous waste cleanups in Washington State, responded to my request and is preparing a public participation plan. However, they are still relying on information and notice from the Navy - whose materials include misleading statements implying that the only radioactive contamination is Alpha radiation, which can be stopped by paper or a layer of dirt (although it is highly dangerous if ingested or in contact with skin).
However, radioactive Strontium 90, Cesium and forms of Radium which give off Gamma radiation, which can penetrate walls or soil, are also present.
Contaminated areas include soils around the buildings and under parking areas; and, may extend to the Lake Washington shoreline sediments where storm drains discharge.
The proposed timing of the cleanup will also overlap with the reconstruction of Sand Point Way NE, with road detours at the same time that hundreds of truckloads of radioactively contaminated soil and debris may be leaving the Park this summer.
From reviewing the cleanup plan, I am very concerned that the Navy's plan would leave radioactive contamination at levels 80 to 240 times the acceptable cancer risk allowed for children at hazardous waste cleanup sites under Washington's Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA). The Navy's plan - which would allow future exposures to 15 millirem of radiation per year from Radium and Strontium - does not even reference our state cleanup standards.
I'll be calling for:
1.Cleanup to meet our state's stricter cancer risk cleanup standards to reduce exposures to meet our state's cleanup standards and increase cleanup as appropriate for a public park - where children play and future park users and residents may have vegetable or herb gardens;
2.Investigation of whether there is contamination of the sediments in Lake Washington around the storm sewer outfalls and along the drain lines;
3.Not trucking wastes on detour routes, or when there are backups, during Sand Point Way NE construction;
4.Public input into development of a Public Participation Plan by Washington's Department of Ecology (including notice and signage about the contamination); and,
5.Ecology taking regulatory authority over the cleanup.

None of that has changed. But, we'll now be welcoming MK Adi Koll, rather than MK Ronen Hoffman, whose official duties interfered with his trip to the US.
MK Koll, who earned her PhD from Columbia, is part of an emergent, forward thinking wave in Israeli politics. She is a member of Israel's new Yesh Atid party, which made a return to peace negotiations a condition for its involvement in the new Israeli government.

(51,907 posts)This summer, across the country, the climate movement is putting political heat on the fossil fuel industry -- just like they've been raising the mercury on us.
As part of Summer Heat actions across the country this summer, Bill McKibben, author and co-founder of 350.org, will be in Vancouver, WA to talk about climate change, the climate movement and fossil fuel export terminals in the NW. Vancouver is emerging as a front line in the climate fight with a 360,000 barrel/day oil export terminal supplied by toxic fracking wells. Once built, this terminal could become an export facility for dirty tar sands oil.
Bill will be coming to town on July 17th and speaking in Gaiser Hall at Clark College about how the Pacific Northwest can step up against plans to turn our communities into fossil fuel export corridors, beginning with the Summer Heat action on the Columbia that is scheduled for July 27th.

This year while all the focus has been on Olympia, a group of King County stakeholders has been working to assess the feasibility of a low-income transit fare. Get the first peek at their recommendations at our July Friday Forum.
In 2012, the King County Council voted to establish the Low-Income Fare Options Advisory Committee, a group of diverse stakeholders charged with reviewing Metro's current reduced fare options, and developing recommendations for a new low-income fare program.
Guided by the principle that a low-income fare is critical to providing all people and communities with dignified and affordable transportation options, the advisory committee discussed and developed recommendations on the definition of "low-income," options for verifying eligibility, fare price points, and how, even in the face of looming bus cuts, Metro might fund the implementation of a low-income fare.
Join our panel - with representatives from both the advisory committee and King County Metro - to discuss the committee process and perspectives, as well as the real-world potential for a low-income fare.

(51,907 posts)The Trans-Pacific 'Partnership' (TPP) is a massive "free trade agreement" that could impact nearly every aspect of our lives, from the food we eat to the air we breathe to the quality of our jobs.
One of the impacts of the TPP would likely be a substantial increase in U.S. natural gas exports to countries in the Pacific Rim, paving the way for more fracking across the United States.

The TPP would also allow foreign corporations to sue governments directly -- for unlimited cash compensation -- over almost any domestic environmental or other law that the corporation believes is hurting its ability to make a profit.

•Washington only works when all people who bike, walk, take transit, and drive have an equal opportunity to get where we need to go safely and efficiently. We need future-oriented transportation investments that represent our values and share our priorities for safety, jobs, and health.
•Cost-effective investments in biking and walking transportation are good for drivers too; they increase safety for all while they keep people moving and reduce pollution from Washington’s roadways.
•Safe, comfortable, complete bike networks attract businesses, a talented workforce, tourists, and home buyers to help grow Washington’s economy.
•Bikes mean jobs: Biking and walking investments create 40% more jobs per dollar spent than for other transportation projects.
•Investments in Safe Routes to School to help kids walk and bike have improved safety with zero collisions or injuries at all Safe Routes project sites, and have helped our kids get more active and arrive at school ready to learn. We need to keep this up to make the next generation healthier.
•In Washington driving user fees (gas taxes, licenses, tolls) fund less than half the cost of our streets and roads. We all pay for streets—we should all be able to move freely and safely.
When the legislature comes to your town, show up to show them you care. Speak up to tell them your story. Stand up for biking and walking, for fixing our roads, for investing in the transportation system of the future. It takes every one of us to make sure Washington bikes.

The training is a combination of skills based classes that will teach participants about Fire Suppression, Utility Control, Light Search and Rescue and Disaster First Aid, in addition to basic tenants of Emergency Preparedness and Emergency Response.
Because CERT training is designed so each class builds on the previous one, it is important that participants be available to attend all of the classes. The schedule for the Winter CERT class is as follows.

(51,907 posts)Our roads and bridges are crumbling. We have too many unfinished sidewalks and bike lanes. The stop-gap funding to prevent 17% cuts to King County buses goes away early next year. Other transit agencies have already made the drastic cuts. We need action right now.
The state Senate is hosting public hearings on transportation across the state, and has added a Seattle Hearing date on October 14th. The only way to pass a balanced transportation package in a special session this November is if the Senate hears loudly and clearly that voters like you are demanding action. They want to hear from you about what needs to be included in a transportation package. You may know that we have been working to reach 150,000 solar roofs in Washington, but you may also still be wondering if solar actually works for Washington – especially in the pouring rain. The short answer: YES!
Tomorrow, we’ll be releasing our new report, "Lighting The Way: What We Can Learn From America’s Top 12 Solar States." We will be standing outside the Bullitt Center, the greenest commercial building in the world and a shining example of how homeowners and businesses can take steps to reduce our carbon emissions and tackle climate change.
Stand with us tomorrow to urge our leaders to get more solar power in Washington.
According to this report, it’s not the climate of the state that allows for more solar power: It's the policies. We could reach our goal of 150,000 solar rooftops by 2020, but we need our state leaders to pass policies that incentivize homeowners and businesses to invest in solar energy. That way, more of us can follow the Bullitt Center’s lead in going green.

As of today, we have two people signed up but if there are any other members who would like to go you need to sing up and reserve your room before the end of next week. Unfortunately, as a local we do not have any funds to help. But we could share rooms which would cut down of some expense. Since we are not an official local at this time, we can only go as " at large" delegates.
As you may or may not know, DSA National has launched a program for a comprehensive and grassroots review of DSA’s political and organizational strategy. I will be bringing to the meeting copies of the information I received from the national office.
Plus we can update members on our activities this past summer.

Erie be revised to a Determination of Significance (DS).
The landowner of the 40-acre parcel proposes to harvest timber, construct an access road, and develop the site for residential purposes. EI is requesting the change to a DS, which is required if a project “is likely to have a probable significant adverse environmental impact” and which would require a more detailed Environmental Impact Study. Only written comments will be accepted until 4:30 PM Oct. 8 unless you are one Evergreen Islands’ witnesses.

•The course can be taken in-person (it is based in Skagit County), as an online/in-person hybrid, or entirely online; it can be taken by anyone, anywhere, with an internet connection, and participants can go at their own pace;
•Transformative experiences are front and center: field visits; participation in relevant public hearings and events; films and public presentations; engaging (optional) online activities to supplement in-person experiences; thoughtful discussions
•There is no set “agenda”; the goal is to have experiences that inform and make an impact;
•Practical knowledge is strongly emphasized: to understand attempts at “solution,” and ways to make a difference; to help with course participants’ volunteer or paid work; to help folks consider climate change or sustainable energy-related career directions;
•Diverse age groups are welcomed—from precocious “pre-adults” (for they are indeed the future) to senior citizens;
•Key results of the course will be well documented on the internet, for maximum impact;
•The course is low-cost and “nonprofit,” with a sliding scale and scholarships available to those who need them.

These are exciting times for carbon pricing in the Pacific Northwest. Under the auspices of the Climate Legislative and Executive Workgroup (CLEW), state leaders are, right now, engaged in the first serious look at the subject in years. (Please be sure to attend the hearings on October 23 in Seattle, and December 6 in Olympia!) The work is heavily informed by a recently released report commissioned by the state. It sets a foundation for the important work ahead, but we fear that it makes a few missteps that are unhelpful to policymakers. Our aim is to set the record straight about the benefits (and perils) of carbon pricing.
The truth about carbon pricing—a term that encompasses both carbon taxes and cap-and-trade systems—is that those two policies are two sides of the same coin. Unlike “command and control” policies that directly regulate the economy, “market-based” policies use the power of capitalism to protect the environment. Putting a price on carbon gives businesses and households a powerful financial incentive to reduce their consumption of fossil fuels and other greenhouse gases.
Although there are some (mostly subtle) differences between carbon taxes and cap-and-trade systems, they are more alike than they are different. In this context, efforts by some conservatives to re-label cap-and-trade as “cap-and-tax” makes perfect sense: the point of both of these policies is to make polluting more expensive. For the most part, whatever you do with one you can do with the other. (In particular, you can do either one well, and you can do either one badly.)
And that brings us to the state task force report, produced by the consulting firm SAIC. (Our comments refer to the original SAIC report, which can be found here, but they are also relevant to the updated report released more recently.)

The media coverage of the 5th Assessment Report of the IPCC underlines both the complexity of climate science and the enormous stakes in getting it right, as we try to understand and respond to the fundamental changes to earth’s atmosphere and oceans since the industrial revolution. Universities have a special responsibility to empower each student and educated citizen to make sense of how basic science concepts relate to the life support systems of our planet. We will look at the story of our changing climate, focusing on some of the many connections between climate literacy and ideas in chemistry and physics. Examples will be drawn from a newly completed International Year of Chemistry-2011 legacy project carried out in partnership with IUPAC, UNESCO, RSC and ACS to create a set of interactive web resources for global dissemination, www.explainingclimatechange.com.

Thousands of grocery workers across the Puget Sound are now voting on a tentative contract agreement following long, frustrating negotiations and a near-strike against local union employers (QFC, Fred Meyer, Safeway and Albertsons). At the same time, Walmart workers continue to demand respect and a stop to the bullying and retaliation some have suffered simply for speaking out about unsafe and unfair working conditions.
These struggles are connected. The grocery workers’ bargaining team was told time and time again that the draconian cuts on the table were necessary in order to stay competitive with low-road competitors like Walmart. However, the workers stood strong and united.
Now OUR Walmart (Organization United for Respect at Walmart) leaders in local Walmart stores are preparing to strike, again, to stand up for their legal right to collective action free of intimidation and harassment. Please stand by them November 12th to make it clear that we will never stop until their demands are met.

On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency is holding a public listening session in Seattle about their new rules on coal-fired power plants. These new EPA rules could be a powerful way to reduce climate pollution in the coming years -- and these hearings were designed to gather community input.
Predictably, the fossil fuel industry is pulling out all the stops to weaken, block, or delay these rules. We've heard reports that they're flying in coal lobbyists and corporate shills to make the EPA think that the public doesn't really want tough new regulations on coal plants. We can't let that happen -- and that's where you come in.
Will you join us in Seattle this Thursday November 7th for the EPA public listening session on coal-fired power plants? Together, we can prevent corporate polluters from hijacking this event.

Rep. McDermott was an original signer and took part in the press conference yesterday, announcing the DeLauro-Miller letter which was sent to the President Obama signed by 151 members of the US House. They state "we will oppose 'Fast Track' Trade Promotion Authority or any other mechanism delegating Congress' constitutional authority over trade policy that continues to exclude us from having a meaningful role in the formative states of trade agreements and throughout negotiating and approval processes."
Signers include 18 of 21 Ranking Members from the full committees and 73 from subcommittees, as well as other Democratic Party leadership. While seven members of the Ways & Means Committee did sign the DeLauro-Miller letter, an additional letter from Democratic Ways & Means members, led by Representatives Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), was also sent to the President on Friday, stating that any new trade authority "must reflect the changing nature of international trade and ensure that Congress plays a more meaningful role in the negotiating process than in the 2002 TPA [Trade Promotion Authority]."
Republicans also sent 2 letters in opposition to Fast Track, signed by 27 members. One letter, led by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC) and signed by diverse GOP House members from Representatives Don Young (R-AK) and John Mica (R-FL) to Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Steve Stockman (R-TX) to Frank Lobiondo (R-NJ) and Frank Wolf (R-VA), stated, "we do not agree to cede our constitutional authority to the executive through an approval of a request for 'Fast Track Trade Promotion Authority.'"
The WFTC regrets that Reps Smith, Larsen, Kilmer, DelBene & Heck were in the minority of their own party in not signing on to this letter. We hope that they are committed to voting against fast-track because at this point in time it is the Republicans such as Rep. Dave Reichert who are carrying the water for a fast-track vote Not the Democrats. And not even all of the Republicans-take note Reps Herrera-Beutler, Hastings and McMorris-Rodgers!

Globally, 32 million fewer girls than boys attend primary school, and women comprise two-thirds of the 792 million illiterate adults. Girls who stay in school earn more as adults and are more likely to have healthy children and send those children to school. They are less likely to become pregnant as teens, be married as children, and die in childbirth.
The film illustrates how education can empower girls and communities through the compelling stories of nine girls in nine different countries.

In the midst of the economic recession, lawmakers often cry, “We’re Broke!” as they slash budgets for the social safety net, education, transportation, and public safety. Meanwhile, multibillion-dollar corporations make record profits, and hide these profits overseas to avoid paying taxes. We’re Not Broke, from Onshore Productions, tells the story of U.S. corporations dodging billions of dollars in income tax, and how seven fed-up Americans take their frustration to the street, vowing to make the corporations pay their fair share.
Please join us for the film and in promoting this FREE event to your friends, families and networks. The film will be followed by a panel discussion that highlights local issues and advocacy opportunities.
