Mason County willing to waive fees for paying property taxes late due to COVID-19

Mason County Treasurer Lisa Frazier plans to forgive interest and penalties for taxpayers who are in need and unable to pay property taxes by the April 30 deadline, according to a county press release.

Unlike the deadline extension in Thurston County, Mason County residents who want an extension must apply using a form available at www.co.mason.wa.us/treasurer by April 30, the press release reads. Frazier told The Olympian in a phone interview that everyone who applies will be successful.

“It’s a delicate balance trying to assist our property owners affected by this pandemic and ensure our local government operations have funding to continue serving our community,” Frazier wrote.

The property tax deadline in Mason County remains April 30, and the treasurer is encouraging property owners to pay their first half or full year of property taxes early to fund “essential services” needed to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and help offset the lack of revenue from those who can’t pay.
