Amazon donates thousands of laptops to Seattle elementary students amid COVID-19 outbreak
Amazon said it would donate 8,200 laptops to students in Seattle Public Schools so they could continue with remote learning as schools across the state remain closed amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The laptop donations -- worth more than $2 million -- will go to elementary school students who don't have a laptop to use. The donation meets the "estimated need" for elementary students, according to a news release from SPS.
Amazons gift comes at a crucial time for our students, SPS Superintendent Denise Juneau said in a statement. Weve never lost sight of the need to continue our students education -- even during this unprecedented time and our community partner Amazon now makes it easier to keep moving forward with the critical work of teaching and learning.
Seattle Public Schools closed schools in mid-March, just a day before Gov. Jay Inslee announced all schools across Washington would need to shut down at least through the end of April. Inslee last week extended his stay-at-home order, closing all nonessential businesses and banning all gatherings, through May 4.
