Bremerton's Armed Forces Day Parade postponed amid coronavirus
Bremerton's Armed Forces Day Festival and Parade, the longest-running procession of its kind in the country, will be postponed indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers behind Poulsbos Viking Fest, which traditionally takes place the same weekend as Armed Forces Day, are also considering postponing festivities.
The board of directors for the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade, voted Friday to postpone the festival. Board members really feel (their) commitment to the community and did not want to cancel the parade outright, chamber president and CEO Denise Frey said.
Its certainly not in anyones best interest to bring large amounts of people together, from a public health perspective, Frey said. She added that tapping Bremerton city services including police officers, firefighters and public works employees to support a parade during the pandemic wouldnt be possible.
They cannot focus those services on a festival right now," Frey said. "Theyre using all their city resources to manage the impact of the virus.
