Report: Washington state has 6th fewest healthcare workers per capita

Washington has the sixth fewest healthcare workers per capita among every state across the country, according to a new study.

The study, from Self Financial, comes as the spread of the novel coronavirus has left healthcare workers in the Seattle area and across the country with a lack of supplies and personal protection equipment as hospitals implement surge plans to meet an influx of patients.

The analysis found Washington has an average of 3.35 healthcare workers per 100 people in the state. According to the data, Washington has 252,590 healthcare workers, including 165,250 healthcare practitioners and 87,340 healthcare support workers.

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area also ranked in the bottom half of the list of large metro areas analyzed for the study, coming in at No. 37 out of 53 metro areas ranked by the number of healthcare workers per capita. The Seattle metro areas has 3.63 healthcare workers per capita, according to the study.
