Early unemployment claims in Washington state skyrocketed this week due to coronavirus impacts

Initial unemployment claims surged 119 percent in Washington state, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

Nationally, claims rose 33 percent. "During the week ending March 14, the increase in initial claims are clearly attributable to impacts from the COVID-19 virus," the labor department release states.

The situation, while devastating to thousands of people, does present an opportunity for labor-starved companies in the region to find workers. Talking Rain Beverage Co., is trying to capitalize with offers of jobs.

Reports of mass layoffs in Seattle began March 11 as hotel occupancy rates fell dramatically in large part due to big corporations halting business travel. Five days later, Gov. Jay Inslee ordered bars, restaurants and theaters close, though takeout and delivery of food is allowed.
