More than 6,000 Seattle families impacted by COVID-19 to get grocery vouchers from city

More than 6,000 families impacted by the spread of COVID-19 in Seattle will receive grocery vouchers from the city to help buy food and other supplies, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced Monday.

The city will issue $800 vouchers to 6,250 families, totaling about $5 million, which can be used at Safeway stores across the state. The vouchers will be issued to families participating in city-supported child care programs or food assistance programs, the city said. They will be distributed by the city's Office of Sustainability and Environment.

“We know that working families in Seattle are already struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As schools and child care facilities close, we need to do everything we can to support families and ensure they can put food on the table,” Durkan said in a statement.

“Our city has been working on many new unprecedented efforts as it relates to housing assistance, meals, and small businesses, but we know it is not enough for the families struggling. Ultimately, we will need an unprecedented relief package from Congress to address the long-term consequences for working people who are already feeling the impact of this global pandemic.”

Nice, but why Safeway? This seems like a propup of a company. RockCreek Mar 2020 #2

Why not use the food stamp model, even the same vouchers/cards. That ensures the money is spent on necessities without dictating where. It helps to spread the spending over other, and locally owned, businesses.

This is not to say this should not be done -- on the contrary. Relief should not be used to prop up specific comoanies, however. It will be interesting to see Seattle's reaction -- that aspect is likely to rub many there the wrong way.
