'Beloved teachers' offered to go claims Seattle's Kennedy High School president

Two "beloved teachers" at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Seattle volunteered to quit after disclosing plans to marry their same-sex partners, KHS President Michael Prato said Friday in a letter written with approval from Catholic Archbishop Paul Etienne.

The Prato letter contrasts with statements from attorney Shannon McMinimee, who represents teachers Paul Danforth and Michelle Beattie, who told National Catholic Reporter that the Archdiocese of Seattle had made clear "that continued employment was incompatible with being honest about being gay and engaged."

The letter from Prato was released at the same time as students from Kennedy, Seattle Prep and O'Dea High Schools rallied in support of Danforth and Beattie on the steps of St. James Cathedral and in front of the diocesan chancery. Parents and KHS alumni demonstrated at the Archdiocese earlier in the week.

In his letter, Prato said he hopes to make people "understand" that "their departure is not due to their sexual orientation." But he went on:

"In this case the two teachers came to me in November to share their desire to marry their same-sex partners. We discussed this decision in the context of their covenant agreement and they voluntarily resigned.
