Port of Seattle moves to combat human trafficking at airport, maritime facilities
The Port of Seattle is implementing new training for its 2,000 employees to help them spot criminals who use the region's air and sea sports to advance criminal human trafficking activities.
The special training was developed in partnership with the nonprofit group Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking. The port says it's the first proprietary training of its kind by a port authority.
The new courses being offered are titled Flights to Freedom: Human Trafficking Training Prevention for aviation employees, and Ports to Freedom: Human Trafficking Training Prevention for maritime employees. Participants take online webinars and some in-person sessions that aim to give them the knowledge to spot, report and quickly respond to suspected instances of human trafficking.
The Port has made a commitment to safety and security. That includes learning to help spot and stop human trafficking, said Port of Seattle Commission President Peter Steinbrueck in a news release.
