Seattle status check: Still rainy, still haven't had a sunny day in nearly 2 months
SEATTLE -- Rainy days and cloudy weather are not supposed to really be all that unusual for Seattle this time of year. But even by our soggy standards, this winter is working on a nearly unprecedented barrage on the local sun fans.
For starters, Seattle has still not had an official sunny day since "Meteorological Winter" began on Dec. 1. It was sunny on Thanksgiving, Black Friday and ... whatever that Saturday is called. But apparently a sunny Thanksgiving so shocked the system that when the clouds finally returned that Sunday, Dec. 1, they have yet to cede control.
In fact, the only days even considered "partly sunny" remain Dec. 15 and Christmas Day -- and even those days had 70% average cloud cover. Yep, every day in January has been considered cloudy with at least 80% cloud cover with eight days considered 100% overcast through the day -- though there have been some brief periods of sunshine, too. December went down as the cloudiest month in at least the past five years; January has a decent chance to match or exceed it.
And yes, those clouds have brought along the rain. It was totally dry on Jan. 1. -- it's been the only day this decade not to rain at some point in Seattle. Through Jan. 26, we've seen 23 days of measurable rain with two others reporting a trace.
