OLYMPIA The Washington Senate has once again approved a measure to ban single-use plastic bags.
The chamber voted 30-19 Wednesday to re-pass the measure it first passed during last years legislative session. The bill now heads to the House, where it stalled last year.
The bill would ban stores from giving out single-use plastic carryout bags and require an 8-cent charge for other bags handed out.
Beyond banning single-use plastic bags, the bill would require recycled paper bags to have at least 40 percent recycled material.

(12,712 posts)This is good to hear, but what about the rest of the stuff in the store? There is plastic packing all over the place.
I think I throw out far more plastic in total from the packaging than the sum total of the single-use plastic bags. The ratio is highly skewed towards the product packaging.
We also have some problems with recycling the stuff that's supposed to be recyclable, so that needs to be addressed as well, or all of this is just dabbing the gaping wound with a tissue.
