A majority of Republicans in Congress, 39 of 53 GOP senators and 168 of 199 House members, signed the brief. The two Democrats are Reps. Dan Lininski of Illinois and Collin Peterson of Minnesota. A third Republican from Washington, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, did not sign the brief. She faces a difficult reelection race this year.
The brief argued there is a "need for the Court to again take up the issue of whether Roe and Casey should be reconsidered and if appropriate overruled." The 1992 Planned Parenthood vs. Casey decision, work of three centrist justices, upheld and affirmed the right of a woman to choose..
