Washington, 23 other states will get minimum wage hikes in 2020

Washington and 23 other states will raise minimum wage levels during 2020, with hikes of $1 or more in several states and major cities reaching or passing the $15-an-hour wage that made SeaTac and Seattle pace-setting cities earlier in this decade.

The federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour hasn't changed for a decade, and Republicans are keeping it that way. The Democrat-controlled house passed legislation to ramp up the minimum wage to $15-an-hour by 2025. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won't let it come to a vote in Congress' upper chamber.

But states have acted, some by legislation, most like Washington by initiative. The state's latest wage increase was set by an initiative passed by voters in 2016. an initiative passed by voters in 2016. The 2014 election saw three states vote to raise their minimum wage levels while turning Democratic senators out of office.

Twenty-one states will hike their minimum wage levels on or about Jan. 1 while Connecticut, Nevada and Oregon will follow later during the year. Increases will range from 10 cents an hour to $1.50.

them rolled back. In MO (Kansas City and St. Louis), they increased the min. wage upwards, and the state legislators (republicans of course) forced the cities to roll the increases back to the state mandated level. I guess they felt like even thought the rest of the state (besides KC and STL) could live on the lower min. wage, so could the voters that approved the increases in KC and STL.
