Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension likely to run over-budget, receives more funding
Unexpected underground conditions have added difficulty and cost to the Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension, which Sound Transit funneled more funding into Friday as the project looks likely to run over budget.
Sound Transit increased contingency funding for the Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension by $4.3 million Thursday to $9.7 million, or nearly 9 percent of the price tag on its construction contract with Walsh Construction Company. That's nearly double the contingency when Sound Transit awarded the $108.2 million contract in July 2018.
Construction is about half complete on the project, which will more than double the length of Tacomas light rail system with connections in the Stadium District, Wright Park and major medical facilities.
The project is 80 percent likely to overshoot its $217.3 million budget, according to the transit agency, which has committed 83 percent of the projects budgeted contingency. Sound Transit board member and System Expansion Committee Chair Claudia Balduccisaid she expects the contractor will return for more.
