High-income renters, luxury units and smaller apartments: Here is how housing in Seattle has changed

Seattle has seen a lot of change in housing trends over the past decade. Rents have shot up, high-income renters have moved into the city at increasing paces and thousands of additional housing units have been put up.

Here's how Seattle ranked in terms of housing trends at the end of the decade.

The city saw a significant increase in renters making $150,000 or more, according to a new report from RentCafe. The number shot up from 6,200 to 32,000, bringing the city in fourth among those that had the largest increases in high-income renters. That means the number of high-income renters multiplied 5.2 times. Nationally, the number of high-income renters also shot up across the country over the past decade.

Seattle also added 92,100 units throughout the decade, according to RentCafe. The city came in sixth in that ranking among cities that saw the most construction of apartments. And, going in line with the dramatic increase in high-income renters, one-quarter of the units added were considered luxury units. Across the country, there were 2.4 million units constructed over the past decade and the decade also saw an increased demand for luxury units nationally.
