The controversial Initiative 976 could kill a lot of jobs that would have otherwise been created as it would strip millions of dollars from transportation and maintenance projects.
Tim Eyman's $30 car tab measure could mean far fewer jobs created to build and maintain the state's infrastructure and expand its transportation systems, in addition to potential job losses due to the predicted decreases in bus service hours.
According to King County, if the measure takes effect, King County Metro would try to keep all of its employees and potentially relocate them to other areas, but it could cause a reduction in the workforce.
If I-976 passes, Metro would seek to retain all current employees as we work with policymakers on addressing reductions in funding. Shifting employees to other work on funded programs may be one option, King County Metro wrote in a Q&A on its website. However, policy choices could result in a reduction in workforce. A reduction of 175,000 service hours represents the work of approximately 78 full-time employees.
A spokesman from King County Metro said there were no specific details he could share about exactly what kind of impact the initiative could have on hours or jobs. But the the initiative could cut millions in the funding of King County Metro, which the county predicts would result in 175,000 Metro bus service hours being cut on 74 routes in Seattle, Burien, Shoreline, Skyway, Tukwila and White Center.
David Groves, communications director with the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, said if a city or county is unable to continue operations at the current level and needs to cut bus routes, there could be a pretty immediate impact on jobs.
