Update: Repairs stretch into Monday night after major gas leak in U District

SEATTLE - Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a major natural gas leak in the University District after a construction crew ruptured a gas main there, emergency officials said.

Officials with Puget Sound Energy said an excavator was digging in the area when it struck a 2-inch gas main, piercing it.

A few hours later, at about 5 p.m., the Seattle Fire Department said that Puget Sound Energy had secured the leak.

At least a hundred people were evacuated from several businesses and two high-rise buildings in a four-block area at NE 45th Street near University Way NE as the strong smell of gas traveled for several blocks.
