For tourists or commuters? Seattle Monorail to begin accepting ORCA Card payments Oct. 7

Starting Monday, the Seattle Monorail will officially be integrated into the ORCA Card system, making it more accessible than ever to Seattle commuters and not just tourists.

The monorail runs 1.2 miles down Fifth Avenue, between Seattle Center and Westlake Center -- obviously two locations that are popular to tourists.

But Westlake Center is also a bustling transit hub for light rail, King County Metro and multi-county commuter bus riders. And the monorail is popular -- 2 million riders rode it in 2018, compared to 1.7 million on the First Hill and South Lake Union streetcars combined, according to a Seattle Times report.

The monorail is owned by the City of Seattle, operated by the private company Seattle Monorail Services and receives Federal Transit Administration funding.

It costs $3 to ride the monorail for adults ages 19-64. Youth ages 6-19 and those who otherwise qualify for reduced fare will pay $1.50. Kids ages 5 and under will be free.
