Killing of wolves by the state, in the Kettle Range of northeast Washington, has reached a "simply unacceptable" level, Gov. Jay Inslee said Monday in a letter to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The governor's letter comes against a backdrop of wolf killing, based on predation of livestock. It included the killing of four wolves from the Old Profanity pack on the same August morning when a King County Superior Court judge was ordering a halt to "lethal removal."
It was, said a WDFW spokesperson, a case of "unfortunate timing."
"We must find new methods to better support coexistence between Washington's livestock industry and gray wolves in our state: The status quo of annual wolf removal is simply unacceptable," Inslee said
Wolves were wiped out in Washington back in the 1930s, at the behest of the livestock industry. Starting in the past decade, however, "canis lupus" began to come back over the border.
A den was established on slopes of Hozomeen Mountain in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. A wolf was photographed sauntering across a playground in British Columbia's Skagit Valley Provincial Park, just a few yards from the border.
But the majority of the state's wolves live in the Kettle Range and Selkirk Mountains near the Washington-British Columbia border. Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties represent a very conservative corner of the state.

(1,256 posts)They need complete culture change at the WDFW, starting at the head. The culture of trigger happy wannabe cops need to be reined in. The cattleman that placed his cattle twice in harms way intentionally should lose his leases to state land.
