RICHMOND Gov. Robert F. McDonnell announced Tuesday that he and his wife have repaid more than $120,000 to Star Scientific chief executive Jonnie R. Williams Sr. and apologized for the first time for the controversy involving the prominent donor.
I am deeply sorry for the embarrassment certain members of my family and I brought upon my beloved Virginia and her citizens, McDonnell said in a statement announced via Twitter. I want you to know that I broke no laws and that I am committed to regaining your sacred trust and confidence. I hope todays action is another step toward that end.
So, I guess he won't be needing this:

RICHMOND Supporters of Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell have established a legal-defense fund for the Republican, the subject of state and federal investigations related to his connection to a businessman who showered the first family with luxury items, monetary gifts and loans.
Restoration Fund was formed this week as a nonprofit corporation but one that will function as a political organization meaning donations will not be tax-deductible, according to Stanley Baldwin, a Virginia Beach lawyer who will be its chairman.

(12,051 posts)4. How does he figure he didn't break the law? Surely there are regulations about accepting
money from donors/possible donors? WTF is he talking about? Is this a case where a robber can return loot and the cops will let him go?

Technically, what McDonnell did may not have violated any Virginia laws. However, that is because Virginia laws only say "Please do your graft in the evening, gentlemen."
