Update to Explain What Happened Last Year:
Here's some explanation for the reasons why women were protesting at the Va. State Capitol, when riot policed charged up and arrested peaceful protesters on the steps of the Capitol Building:

A series of anti-women measures had been proposed, including a mandatory government ordered ultrasound law.

You might also enjoy this more recent story about how 6 Virginia State alcohol beverage control officers in plain-clothes surrounded a 20 year old female University of Virginia student while she was getting into her car 10 pm at night in a shopping center parking lot. The agents thought she had bought beer, but it was actually bottled water. They then jumped on her car, and pulled a gun on her, while she and her two sorority sisters desperately called 911 thinking they were being attacked. The state agents then threw her in jail for the night and charged her with 3 felonies.
The charges were not dropped for 2 and a half months, while she was fearful that she was going to be forced out of the university. The agency did an investigation and said that no mistakes were made. Then, it hit the blogs, and a new investigation is supposed to be starting.

(81,300 posts)It's most disquieting - this feeling of being under siege again. But that's exactly what's going on, and in TOO MANY states at the moment. Sickness. And frustrating as hell!
If I had a dime for every woman I've heard say some version of - "but this is the 21st Century - I just can't believe we're STILL fighting for this! I thought this was settled decades ago!" - I'd probably have enough $$ to outspend the koch brothers.

The Posse Comitatus Act is the United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction and was updated in 1981. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) was to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce the State laws.
The Bill/Act as modified in 1981 refers to the Armed Forces of the United States. It does not apply to the National Guard under state authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within its home state or in an adjacent state if invited by that state's governor. The U.S. Coast Guard, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security, is also not covered by the Posse Comitatus Act, primarily because the Coast Guard has both a maritime law enforcement mission and a federal regulatory agency mission.

Recent legislative events
In 2006, Congress modified the Insurrection Act as part of the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill (repealed as of 2008).
On September 26, 2006, President Bush urged Congress to consider revising federal laws so that U.S. armed forces could restore public order and enforce laws in the aftermath of a natural disaster, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition.
These changes were included in the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122), which was signed into law on October 17, 2006.
Section 1076 is titled "Use of the Armed Forces in major public emergencies." It provided that:
The President may employ the armed forces... to... restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition... the President determines that... domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order... or [to] suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy if such... a condition... so hinders the execution of the laws... that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law... or opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.
In 2008, these changes in the Insurrection Act of 1807 were repealed in their entirety, reverting to the previous wording of the Insurrection Act that in its original form was written to limit Presidential power as much as possible in the event of insurrection, rebellion, or lawlessness.
In 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama signed National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 into law. Section 1031, clause "b", article 2 defines a 'covered person', i.e., someone possibly subject to martial law, as the following: "A person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces."

Is there an pictures that have both the protestors and the military in frame?
I'm paranoid this may be a plant from the other side to discredit the side opposite them.
I had no idea Virginia women could be such a national security threat!

(9,865 posts)The difference between Syria, Lybia and Iran and Virginia is that non_American protestors will stay for days, they will risk their lives and they will get each other's backs by staying engaged.
In America, protestors give up, go home, sign a petition.

(459 posts)Americans should not put up with this. A peaceful womans rally has the creeps that are trying to change America law to Sharia law running scared. Any law that is religious based to start is Sharia law. The Muslims, ah er, Christian fundamentalists are the American Taliban. They have silently, cowardly declared war on the women of America.

(65,392 posts)In the early 20th century abuse of suffragettes by police was common in both the US and the UK. A delegation of 300 suffragettes to the British Parliament was so viciously attacked and beaten that at least two women died of the injuries they suffered that day:
In response the Womens Parliament sent a deputation of 300 women to the House of Commons where they were met with ranks of police. For six hours women were batoned, beaten, punched, thrown to the ground, kicked on the floor and had their faces rubbed against railings in full view of the House of Commons. There were also widespread reports of police sexually abusing the demonstrators. They repeatedly pinched and twisted their breasts, lifted their skirts, groping and assaulting the women for hours <emphasis added>.
The true cost of Black Friday would only be known some time after the event. At least two women died as a result of their injuries that day. Another woman who had been badly treated by the police and was arrested for stone throwing a few days later died after being released from prison on Christmas Day 1910 - she was Emmeline Pankhursts sister, Mary Clarke. - See more at: http://www.counterfire.org/index.php/articles/75-our-history/7697-the-suffragettes-black-friday-and-the-two-types-of-window-smashing#sthash.pxyDql3O.dpuf
