James Fields has pleaded guilty to 29 federal hate crimes, including one for the murder of Heather Heyer. The 30th federal charge, which carried the possibility of the death penalty, was dropped in exchange.

Heather Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, says, “It’s a relief to think that we don’t have to go through another trial. It was exhausting the first time.”

As for taking the death penalty off the table: “There’s no point in killing him. It would not bring back Heather.”
