CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- City councilors voted unanimously to rename Preston Avenue during their meeting Monday night.

The proposal was brought to the table by Wes Bellamy to change the meaning behind the street name.

Preston Avenue was originally named after Thomas Lewis Preston, a Confederate soldier, slave owner, and the first rector at the University of Virginia.

Bellamy's proposal would change the meaning to honor Asalie Minor Preston, an African-American educator who taught in segregated schools between 1922 and 1933.
