University of Virginia, William & Mary again rank high in top college rankings

The University of Virginia is still one of the top 25 colleges in the U.S., according to the 2019 U.S. News and World Report National University ranking, released Monday. ... U.Va. came in at No. 25 on this year’s list, the same spot as a year ago. The Charlottesville school was also named the third-best public university in the U.S. behind the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Virginia had three top-100 schools in the national university ranking. ... In the national liberal arts school rankings, Washington and Lee University returned to its 2017 ranking of No. 11. The University of Richmond, the only other Virginia school in the top 50 of the liberal arts rankings, dropped two spots to No. 25. Both were ranked in the top 25 for best value school in the liberal arts category.

The closely followed U.S. News and World Report list is considered the definitive ranking in higher education. The criteria for the rankings, which include reputation, alumni giving and graduation rates, among others, often drive university policy as schools work to improve their spots on the list.

The annual report assesses more than 1,800 schools across the U.S. and ranks about 300 of them in the national rankings. Separate lists, such as best liberal arts colleges, best value schools and best undergraduate business programs, are also distributed.
