Virginia is using big money to land a big fish - a $3 billion investment by Micron Technology Inc. to expand its operation in Manassas, with the incentive of a $70 million state performance grant.
Gov. Ralph Northam announced on Wednesday that Micron has committed to the investment and the creation of 1,100 jobs in the next 12 years to fortify the company's role as a major exporter of memory products used in technologies ranging from automobiles to industrial operations and networking markets.
The expansion includes the creation of a global research and development center that will employ 100 product engineers to apply research in advanced technologies such as unmanned and autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things - technologies connecting a vast array of interconnected wireless devices.

Micron, based in Boise, Idaho, has committed to contribute $1 million to some of Virginia's universities and and community colleges to develop scientists, engineers and technicians for future technological research and commercial development.
