In response to La Porte petition, Va.Tech says it will look to honor all 32 shooting victims equally

Virginia Tech will make a concerted effort to honor the victims of the April 16, 2007, campus shooting together and in unison, declining to name the new Corps of Cadets residence hall after the only cadet who died in the shootings.

The stance comes after three members of Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets started a petition to honor the act of valor by Matthew La Porte – who famously tried to intervene in the tragedy – to put his name on a new dormitory building slated to open in August.

The trio of juniors – Andy King, Nicholas Oberle and Tristan Nguyen – started an online petition last week to name the building after him. So far, the Care2 petition gathered more than 35,000 digital signatures from around the country and world.

However, Virginia Tech administrators will not take action on the petition, though they praised its spirit, according to a written statement from the university Tuesday afternoon.
