Montgomery County proposes budget increase, includes employee raises
CHRISTIANSBURG Montgomery Countys proposed $186.3 million budget marks an approximately $4.1 million increase that is mostly being covered with additional money from a variety of taxes.
The proposed budget, which county administration presented to the board of supervisors on Monday night, does not call for a real estate tax increase, but does fall nearly $3 millions short of the money Montgomery County Public Schools want for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
The county currently has a budget of $182.1 million, $104.5 million of which is dedicated to schools.
County administrator Craig Meadows told supervisors that a key part of the proposed budget includes a 2 percent across-the-board raise for the countys roughly 400 full-time employees. He defended the raise request by bringing up the need to try to make salaries more competitive.
