Virginia Legislature Makes Progress on Raising Judicial Retirement Age

After nearly a decade of consideration, Virginia legislators are close to increasing the judicial retirement age from the current limit of 70. At Gavel to Gavel, http://www.brennancenter.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=78087&qid=3610564 Bill Raftery explains that, after eight straight years in which a bill to eliminate or increase the age limit was unsuccessfully introduced, “both the Virginia House and Senate . . . moved towards final approval of a plan to increase the age to 73.” According to Raftery, the General Assembly refused to pass http://www.brennancenter.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=78088&qid=3610564 last year’s plan to increase the judicial retirement age “amid debate over restarting the state’s Judicial Performance Evaluation program,” an issue he says was resolved last year when the program was established and funded, “paving the way for this years’ votes.”
